When Meg Swansen was 5, her mother, Elizabeth Zimmermann, taught her to knit. At present Meg runs Schoolhouse Press, publishes books, produces instructional knitting DVDs, teaches at Knitting Camp, has written four knitting books, designs for Wool Gathering, has a regular column in Vogue Knitting and continues to be obsessed by knitting. She lives with her cats in central Wisconsin.
Another project knit from the top down. An intriguing foot that conforms to the wearer’s arch (the flat-footed among us need not bother). Great design possibilities in 2-color or texture.

Because socks rarely wear out on the instep, Elizabeth Zimmermann designed these to be re-footable. Knitted from the top: a standard, circular beginning; switch to back and forth for the ankle and instep; then knit up around the instep and add the foot. When tired of mending holes, the foot may be removed and re-treaded.

A sock knit from the top. An opportunity to play with small, mirror-image color patterns that taper to the ankle and use increases and decreases to form the foot. The toe curls up like a jester’s boot.
