Lucy Neatby

Lucy Neatby is a passionate knitter, who designs and writes patterns to entertain the mind as well as the fingers.  She shares her love and knowledge of the art of hand knitting by giving a myriad of entertaining workshops.  Lucy has won many design competitions, including The Knitting Guild of America’s International Design Challenge and her work has been exhibited widely.  She is former Merchant Navy navigating officer and now the owner of Tradewind Knitwear Designs Inc. and author of “Cool Socks Warm Feet”, “Cool Knitters Finish in Style” and the Learn with Lucy DVD series.

Double Knitting for Socks

An exploration into a variety of Double-Knitting techniques applicable to the ardent sock knitter including: two methods of Tubular cast-on for 1x1 and 2x2 ribs.  Two-color DK technique for double layer socks with a quilting technique to allow the soles to be stuffed with fleece if desired.  How to create a double sole or a pocket in a single yarn sock.

Even Cooler Socks B

Yet more advanced sock techniques for happy sock knitters!  An in-depth look at Tubular sock edges (both cast on and bound off) for single and double ribs and two methods for working them easily.  For decorative effects, we have Striped Quilting heel flap stitch, Twined Crochet Bind-Off and Flying Swallows stitch pattern.  Short row toes (for the no-graft sock) and Sideways Garter Stitch bands for no-swatch sock sizing.

Toe-Up Socks for Travelers

A spontaneous method for producing toe-up socks.  These little gems require very little advance planning and make ideal travel knitting.  The class project is a mini sock.  Using a provisional cast-on, we will work a Bosnian toe square (or rectangle) using waste yarn wraps to mark the knit up positions.  Establishing knitting in the round and positioning left and right raised increases.  Planning, setting-in and knitting the modified Turkish heel and use of waste yarn to create the heel opening.  The sock toe-chimney will be used for easy grafting (Kitchener stitch) of the heel.  The sock top will be finished with a variety of bind-off options to prevent tight sock cuffs.  The various techniques are applicable to many other areas of your knitting life.
