Kat Wilson has always loved counting and putting things into tidy patterns. After an adolescence spent crocheting and drawing endless tessellations on graph paper, the simultaneous college discovery of double entry bookkeeping and knitting set her life’s course. She worked at an indie wholesale yarn company and at her LYS before signing on for a “grown-up” job in public accounting. By day this Certified Public Accountant (CPA) untangles bookkeeping snarls, deciphers the Internal Revenue Code and delights in filling out new and exciting tax forms. She’s known among her clients and colleagues for her endearing, dorky enthusiasm about accounting and her ability to translate technical concepts into unintimidating English. By night (and sometimes while walking to work) she knits lace and colorwork. She prefers patterns that have at least three pages of charts.
If you’ve ever contemplated your stash or design notebook and thought, “I should turn this into a career,” this class is for you. (It’s also for those who have fledgling knit-related businesses). We’ll be covering the basics of business record-keeping and US tax reporting by way of a comprehensive sheep-to-sock accounting example. Along the way, we’ll discuss why the IRS rules are what they are, paper and software accounting systems, and how to make the record-keeping process a useful tool instead of a procrastinated duty.
