Advanced Top Down Sock Design: Going off the Grid

This workshop is geared towards intermediate to advanced sock knitters who are interested in designing sock patterns that veer off the conventional grid.  We will cover techniques related to creating off-the-grid patterns including: working on a diagonal, creating curves, creating your own cable patterns, handling intersecting components, and shaping in lace and cables.  Students will be able to fill in one of several construction templates for off-the-grid design using their own chosen stitch patterns OR they may design an entirely new and original sock pattern.

Oddball Stitches

There’s a world of knitting stitches out there beyond your usual knit, purl, cables, decreases, and yarnovers.  In this class we’ll cover all sorts of oddball stitches that are worked in the round and can add texture and fun to your socks.  Learn about wrapped / clustered stitches, an easier way to do a quadruple decrease, bobbles, and cool laddering techniques.

Class Level:Intermediate
Class Skills:Knit, purl, slip knitwise, slip purlwise, knit into the back loop, purl into the back loop, yarnover, pass slipped stitch over. (Note: if you don’t meet the pre-requisites, spend some time learning these on KnittingHelp.com, and you’ll be set to go.)

The Perfect Rib

One detail that can make or break a design is the way the ribbing flows (or doesn’t flow) into the main pattern.  We’ll cover how to find the perfect rib for any pattern, even pesky cabled patterns where the gauge changes.  This is a great way to add a little extra detail when working from sock patterns and also useful when designing your own.
