Cat Bordhi

Cat Bordhi has been a full-time writer and knitting detective since 2002, and also teaches knitting workshops, gives talks at knitting retreats and to knitting guilds, and teaches writing workshops. She lives in a yarn-filled house tucked away in the woods on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, where she is working on the next book in her New Pathways for Sock Knitters series, jumping out of bed in the middle of the night with new ideas more often than is wise. She is the indefatigable author of Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles, A Treasury of Magical Knitting, A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting, New Pathways for Socks Knitters, and the novel Treasure Forest, and is also the creator of more than a dozen entertaining and instructive Youtube knitting videos, like “Slim and Trim SSK’s,” guaranteed to cure your SSK’s of wobbles and flabbiness.

This class explores the architectures and techniques of the unique socks in Cat’s book, New Pathways for Sock Knitters, Book One. You’ll realize just how each part of a New Pathways sock relates to other parts and learn how the answers to some sock questions might not be what you think they are. “Where can you put the heel?” “Where can you put your increases?” “Where can you put designs?” Cat says, “Anywhere!”  Lest so much freedom paralyze you, Cat will offer basic architectures to give you some structure, and we’ll discuss everything from how to steer stitch patterns gracefully along the curvy mountain road of the foot to fine-tuning fit and ensuring maximum durability. Our day together will be chock full of sock-knitting “Ah ha!” moments and a deeper understanding of how to cover the foot with a continuous strand of yarn in charming and clever ways.

You’ll leave class knowing how to generate original stitches suitable for hand-knitted footwear, which you can collect over time to build your own unique stitch dictionary.
