Anne Hanson

Anne Hanson is Knitspot’s owner and designer, a life-long knitter with a background in the fashion and graphic design fields, who began designing knitwear sometime in the 1970s.  Anne also teaches and writes about knitting, spinning, and designing at her blog, knitspot.com, and lives in Ohio with David, who loves wool, too. Anne’s background as a patternmaker/draper, technical designer, and costumer in New York City’s garment district informs her work, providing a rich source of experience in garment construction and fit, as well as knowledge of a wide range of fibers and fabrics. Anne’s design work has been included in Knitty, Interweave Knits, and Twist Collective, as well as several upcoming publications. In addition, her designs have been commissioned for several popular sock and lace clubs, including the Rockin’ Sock Club, the Woolgirl Sock Club, the Yarn4Socks club, the Fearless Fibers Seven Deadly Sins sock club, and the Wooly Wonka Seasons of Lace Club. She has contributed to Sock Club, Brave New Knits, Sock Knitting Master Class, The Knitter’s Book of Socks.

Designing Off the Cuff

Participants will learn how to enhance a favorite basic sock recipe by swapping in textured or lace stitch patterns and choosing appropriate yarns to complete their personal vision.  The focus for this class is to add imaginative elements to an existing sock recipe for personal fulfillment and use; sizing and pattern writing will not be covered.  Discussion will include: choosing appropriate yarns and making the best use of yarn types, swatching for better results, considerations for choosing (or inventing) sock-worthy motifs, changes in gauge, choosing appropriate ribbings/edgings, making the numbers fit, and solving the fiddly bits (how to fudge it when you need to).

Class Level:Intermediate
Class Skills:Students should have completed several sock projects requiring at least an intermediate level of knitting skill and pattern reading, must embrace simple math, and be able to execute kitchener stitch without assistance.

Holes in our Socks

A beginning lace class for intermediate knitters who want to incorporate lace into their sock projects.  Anne will teach tools and techniques for successful lace knitting, different types of lace stitches, lace terminology, opposing decreases for shaping, working with lace motifs in the round, and an explanation of simple architectural and pictorial shapes in lace.  Students will begin a simple lace sock project.

Class Level:Intermediate
Class Skills:Students must have completed several sock projects, have a full understanding of increasing and decreasing, read patterns with ease, and be able to execute kichener stitch without assistance.

Sock Design

This is a complete sock design class that covers topics of fit and sizing, working stitch patterns into a design, making appropriate design choices for the sock architecture, tips and tricks for achieving desired results, making a marriage of elements, charting, and pattern writing.  Students will draft a sock pattern using a small knit/purl stitch of their choice.

Class Level:Intermediate
Class Skills:Students must be experienced sock knitters skilled in working on multiple needles (DPNs, 2 circs, etc), pattern reading, increasing, decreasing, various heel formats, be able to execute kichener stitch without assistance, and must enjoy math. Students should have completed several sock projects requiring at least an intermediate level of knitting skill and pattern reading.
