Deeper Meaning of Sock Knitting (9:00-10:00)

Sock knitting has exploded as a community making, creativity-inspiring, process-centered industry.  But when we are asked Why? we tend to respond, defensively or aggressively, with the undeniable fact that we like doing it.  But there’s more to the Why? than that.  It is these deep political, sociological and psychological aspects of sock knitting that this lecture means to explore.

Free Sole socks (Toe up)

For avid sock knitters, a new construction that makes posssible stranded socks with plain soles and socks with different yarns on the soles, insteps and tops.  But its greatest advantage comes later, when the sock has developed a hole.  Any part of the sole or heel can be easily removed and reknit.

The socks begin with a two part toe (pick up shaping on chain technique), continue up the instep in pattern (two handed backwards technique), then work the sole, attaching as you go and shaping a gusset (strip joining technique).  Finally turn the heel, pattern it, join the front and knit up the leg.  All this in three hours, making a sock large enough to store quarters in in your car.

Perfect Buttonholes

Someday you will make a pair of socks that demand a sweater to go with them.  When imperfect buttonholes are not an option, you will want to make perfect ones.  This class will teach you how.  It is a slightly tricky procedure, but not beyond the skill of anyone experienced in making socks.

This class is a one hour wonder that repeats three times in each 3 hour block it is offered in.
