Woven Socks

Weaving predates knitting by about 27,000 years and history is rife with examples of handwoven socks and stockings: the Saxon socc, bias-cut medieval hose, and Japanese tabi.  Syne Mitchell will talk you on a guided tour of the history of woven socks, then we’ll dive into hands-on work: draping custom-fitted sock patterns and sewing up a pair of socks from your handwoven (or commercial) fabric.

Syne Mitchell

Class Level:Beginner
Class Skills:Students should be able to hand-sew a (reasonably) straight line with needle and thread. Beginning sewers are welcome, encouraged even.
Cost:$150
Class Length:6 hours
Class Materials:

Fabric (either commercial or handwoven, as specified above.)  A pair of thin, cheap, commercial socks they are willing to sacrifice in class.  The socks need not be new, but they should fit snugly.  Scissors.  Needle and sewing thread that matches their fabric.  Note-taking supplies.  $5 (for duct-tape and hand-made skinny bias tape in a variety of colors/patterns).

Homework:

If you want to work in handwoven fabric, weave at least 12 square feet of cloth, in any width or configuration you like.  Ideally, you want densely woven fabric for this project so your socks will last.  Loosely woven wool fabric can be improved by fulling or felting.  If you are working in commercial fabric, buy 1-1/2 yards of fabric at least 36” wide.  For either case, pre-wash the fabric before coming to class.
