Sock Heels!

If you have ever knit a pair of socks, investing time and tears into a piece of art that you joyfully slip onto your dainty foot only to find that—horrors—the heel is too loose or too tight or Just Not Right, then this class is for you! This session will give you the formula to substitute any one of five sock heels (Dutch, French, German, Welsh and Sherman) into any gauge sock you are knitting. The class will get you five completed socklettes (an inch of ribbing, a heel, a gusset if necessary) that you can try on and wear so you will leave knowing once-and-for-all which heel is the Heel For You! Aside from being darn cute, these are also great pedi-socks!

This class is taught by: Heather Ordover.

Class Level:Beginner
Class Skills:Students should be comfortable working in the round.
Cost:$140.00
Class Length:6 hours
Class Materials:

Yarn: Use your stash. Whatever weight you want; whatever color you want (though it’s easier to see stitches in lighter colors). The closer to worsted you are, the faster the heels go, but you’ll compromise a bit on fit. The finer the yarn, the slower you go, but you’ll get a dead-on accurate fit.

Needles: Match your yarn. You are more than welcome to use DPNs, Magic Loop, or 2 Circs. Free love in the needle world in my class. And mix up yarn weights/needle sizes. If you only have enough scrap sock yarn to make one heel, switch up and do the next one in DK or worsted. Some heels work better in a heavier weight so it won’t damage your success at all. We’ll make it work.

Notions: snippy scissor or yarn cutter, darning needle (anything that fits your yarn), paper worksheets will be provided, but you may well want to have a notebook. Pens are good but you may want a pencil with an eraser as well (we’re doing math, so…well…my eraser is my friend).

Homework:

You will want to make at least two, preferably six, socklettes.
What’s a socklette?
Cast on enough stitches to fit around your ankle in your yarn at your gauge (roughly 40ish+ for worsted, 60ish+ for DK).
K2P2 rib for an inch or more (this is the ankle part of your socklette—like a tennis sock).
One socklette will stop here, as one of our heel flaps will be…unique and we’ll do that together. For the rest, make 1-5 that continue as follows:
Place half of your stitches on a holder (rigid or scrap yarn—your call)
Knit and purl back, slipping the first stich (you can get fancy on your flap if you want, as long as you…read on…)
knit and purl as many rows as you have stitches (32 stitches being worked=32 rows)
Stop!
Put these stitches on a holder (or keep them on the needle if you have enough to spare).
Pick up more yarn. Make another socklette.
From these humble beginnings we will create up to six masterful and completely different heels. Heels you can try on (and use as pedicure socks!), yes try on to test and walk around in to see which fits you best. The worksheet provided guarantees that you will be able to substitute the right heel for you foot into any pattern you choose to knit.
