The island of Gotland is 3 hours off the coast of Sweden and developed a style of stranded colorwork that incorporates motifs and colors that were borrowed from other cultures around the Baltic Sea. The colorwork incorporates geometric, floral, and representational motifs and color charts are used to work the patterns. These patterns are fun to knit and fun to wear.

Needles appropriate to knitting socks in fingering weight yarn, generally size US 2 / 2.75mm, US 2 1/2 / 3mm, or US 3 / 3.25mm. They can be DPNs, 2 circulars, or one long circular, depending on which method is preferred. Also bring normal knitting supplies such as tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, and whatever is used to assist in reading charts. A yarn kit with appropriate amounts of a main color and 2 contrast colors for a pair of colorwork socks will be available for purchase in class for $14. An acceptable substitute in weight and yarn structure would be Jamieson & Smith Jumperweight, Jamieson’s Spindrift, or Elemental Affects Natural Shetland Fingering. You will need 100 yards of a main (background) color and 50 yards each of 2 contrast colors in order to work the colorwork that we will be doing in class (this is not enough for a pair of socks) if a kit is not purchased. | |
