Beaded Cables

Find out why cables and beads belong together! We will learn several ways to pretty up cables with beads, either by nesting beads within the cables themselves or by embellishing around the twists and turns. We will make a beaded cabled cuff, knit in the round just like a sock. Knitters will choose among cable patterns that fit into their stitch count evenly, and will engineer (with help and guidance) a beaded embellishment to their chosen cable pattern. The cuff could be the start of a top down sock, or it could be worn on its own over the top of a boot or shoe.

Class Skills:Students need to have succsessfully knit in the round, using their choice of double pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop. Previous experience with cabling will be helpful.

Class Materials:

-50 grams dk weight yarn for the pair of cabled cuffs.  Students should use solid or semi-solid yarn, no variegated colorways please.
-Cable needle,  spare double pointed needle or smallest diameter of Wanda from Carolina Homespun.
-164 size 6/0 seed beads in a color that either somewhat matches or somewhat contrasts with the yarn. I do not recommend using beads that perfectly match the yarn color. Please use beads that will be visible against the yarn!
-Threader for putting beads onto yarn, such as dental floss threader, big eye beading needle, or wire beading needle.
-Choice of needles for knitting in the round, 3.75 mm (US 5) or size to obtain 22 sts/4” over stockinette st in the round.
-One or more colored marker(s), highlighter(s) or pen(s).
-Stitch markers.
-The usual simple notions: scissors, darning needle.

Note: A class pack containing all of the materials for this class will be available from WEBS in the Marketplace.  You are welcome to hunt your own materials in the wild, or pick up the class pack.

Homework:

Students will need to have wound their yarn into a ball and have the beads threaded onto the outside end of yarn.
