Arch-Shaped Stockings

imageAnother project knit from the top down. An intriguing foot that conforms to the wearer’s arch (the flat-footed among us need not bother). Great design possibilities in 2-color or texture.

Class Skills:Knitters should know how to knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase, decrease, and weave (graft), plus be comfortable working with two colors.

Child’s Size (for class):
-1 ball 5-ply Guernsey Wool or something firmly spun that will knit up at about 6-1/2 to 7 sts to 1”.
- A pair of 24” circular needles of a size to achieve gauge (approx #3-5) - or a set of d.p. needles; or a 40” circular for magic loop.
-Blunt needle for weaving toe.
-Spare needle for cable (optional).

Homework:

This homework is for a single-color, ribbed version.

Child’s Size (for class):
Gauge: about 6-1/2 to 7 sts to 1”.
Size: about 5” around; will stretch to 9”. Calf-and foot-lengths are up to you.

Cast On 44 sts. K1b, p1 for an inch or so.
Optional: establish 9-stitch-Fishbone cables on centers-front and -back as follows: *(k1b, p1)x6. k9 (cable sts). p1. Repeat from *.
Continue as established and cable every 6th round.

Fishbone cable: K 4th stitch on L needle; k sts 1, 2 and 3; remove 4 sts from L needle. K1 (5th stitch). Slip 6th stitch off L needle and hold in front; k sts 7, 8 and 9. K 6th stitch.

At wanted length to ankle (about 4-5”), divide the sts in half and work the …
Heel Flap: Maintain pattern and slip each 1st stitch; work back and forth on 21 center-back sts. If you are knitting the cable: [(K1b, p1)x3, 9 cable sts, (p1, k1b)x3] for about 2+” (approx 20 rows)
